Although every session can be customized, knowing what to expect makes planning much easier. From choosing locations and outfits to incorporating achievements or a cap and gown, here is our step-by-step guide to planning senior pictures.

Step 1: Start Your High School Senior Photography Session With a Conversation

First, we start with a phone call.

Before choosing a location or talking about outfits, we want to learn about your senior. What is she into? What does she love? What does she hope her senior pictures will look and feel like?

During this conversation, we also talk about hobbies, sports, activities, interests, and accomplishments. Some seniors want their achievements incorporated into their Senior Photography Session, while others prefer to focus entirely on portraits. Either approach works!

For example, an athlete may want photographs in her uniform, while a musician might bring an instrument. Meanwhile, another senior may envision flowers, a downtown setting, or a beautiful flowing dress.

Most importantly, the session should reflect her.

Step 2: Choose the Season and Location

Next, we narrow down when and where the session will happen.

The time of year can dramatically change the look of Senior Pictures in Northeast Ohio. Summer gives us lush greenery, flowers, and long evenings. On the other hand, fall brings warmer tones and changing leaves.

Some seniors already have a location in mind. Others simply know the type of setting they love.

Do you picture open fields and beautiful golden light? Maybe your senior loves an urban look with interesting architecture. Perhaps flowers and gardens feel more like her personality. We can talk through those ideas and choose a location that matches her vision.

Once we have a plan, we choose the date and finalize the location.

Afterward, it's time for inspiration!

We encourage seniors to create a Pinterest board with photographs they love. This isn't about recreating someone else's senior pictures. Instead, it gives us insight into the poses, outfits, locations, and overall style that catches your senior's eye.

Sometimes a Pinterest board even reveals a pattern. Maybe she loves golden sunlight and tall grass. Perhaps she gravitates toward city architecture and editorial poses. Alternatively, she may save colorful portraits surrounded by flowers.

That inspiration helps us fine-tune the session while still creating photographs that are uniquely hers. Additionally, if she has a specific theme or creative idea, this is the perfect time to share it.

Step 4: Plan Your Senior Picture Outfit Ideas

Typically, our senior sessions last 60–90 minutes, which gives us enough time for approximately two or three outfits.

When choosing Senior Picture Outfit Ideas, variety is your friend. One outfit might be casual, while another could be dressier. A third look could incorporate a sport, school activity, or something completely different.

Additionally, think about movement. Dresses and skirts that move can photograph beautifully outdoors, while jeans and a favorite top create a more casual look.

For our female seniors, we strongly encourage having hair and makeup professionally done before the session.

Professional hair and makeup can help everything stay polished throughout a 60–90 minute shoot, especially when we're outside dealing with humidity, wind, or changing temperatures. Furthermore, professional makeup artists understand how makeup translates through the camera while still keeping the overall look natural.

That doesn't mean she needs dramatic makeup.

Instead, the goal is to enhance her features, help her feel confident, and create a finished look that lasts throughout the session. As an added bonus, getting hair and makeup done makes senior-picture day feel a little more special!

Step 6: Bring the Details That Tell Her Story

In addition to outfits, consider whether there is anything meaningful your senior wants photographed.

Some seniors bring varsity jackets, sports equipment, musical instruments, awards, or items connected to activities they've spent years pursuing. Others may want to incorporate future college plans.

Additionally, some seniors choose to include their cap and gown, especially as the graduation celebration gets closer.

Of course, none of these elements are required. They simply give us another opportunity to document this chapter of life.

Ultimately, senior portraits are about more than getting a great yearbook photograph. They're about remembering who your senior was before she stepped into whatever comes next.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Senior Photography Session!

Finally, session day arrives!

You don't need to show up knowing how to pose or wondering what to do with your hands. That's our job. Throughout the session, we'll guide you while leaving room for natural movement, genuine expressions, and plenty of personality.

We also encourage you to bring a helper—someone you feel completely comfortable with. For many seniors, that's Mom. For others, it might be a best friend. Choose someone who knows you well, makes you laugh, and will be your biggest cheerleader.

Your helper can carry extra outfits, keep track of jewelry and shoes, check your hair, hold personal items, and help with outfit changes. More importantly, having a familiar face nearby can help you relax and feel like yourself in front of the camera.

Because we've already planned your locations, outfits, interests, and inspiration, the session itself can feel relaxed and fun.

So bring your outfits, your ideas, and your favorite hype person—and enjoy it!
